Introducing…Gary Ghiselli and the Young Surgeons!

Listen to the podcast:

This week we were fortunate enough to speak to Gary Ghiselli, MD, moderator of the Young Surgeons Group on SpineConnect. Gary is a board-certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon specializing in cervical, thoracic and lumbar surgery with a subspecialty interest in complex deformity and degenerative conditions of the cervical spine. He works with Denver Spine, a spine center of excellence that takes a multidisciplinary approach to spine care, here in Colorado. In this second podcast of our series, we catch up with Gary and discuss his experiences with the Young Surgeons Group — why they got started, what kinds of cases they deal with, and how it has changed his professional life on and offline. Gary also discusses how he sees the future of such communities and collaborative work within the spine surgeon community.

The Young Surgeons group is now 33 members strong, with members distributed across the nation. They are orthopedic spine surgeons as well as neurosurgeons and most of them are pretty new, out of training. But as Gary states, ” the nice thing that Syndicom allows you to do is to link to groups that have more experienced surgeons, and reach out to other groups like the UCLA group, to share with more seasoned spine members as well. ” Gary describes the cases presented in the group as usually either complex or controversial. In his own words, “no one, no matter where you train, has seen everything….one of the big advantages of the Young Surgeons Group is that you can reach out and you don’t feel intimidated by people who may have too much experience or feel that your answer may be viewed as too inexperienced. It’s a nice collegial community…it benefits the patient to have many different perspectives. It is like having, second, third, fifth opinions. People weigh in in a very timely fashion, in the hours after a case is presented and it is the timely treatment of the patient, in my mind, that stands out the most.”

We hope you enjoy Gary’s podcast and stay tuned for a longer case study on this wonderful and highly worthwhile group within the SpineConnect community! If you are not a member, sign up now! If you are, keep up the good work and we would love to hear more about your experiences!

Good things happen when we connect!
